The Strings Conservatory Presents "It's A String Thing" – This Year-End Recital is Free and Open to the Public
Registration Opens for The Hi-Desert Cultural Center's Summer String Classes with Free Loaner Violins Available

JOSHUA TREE, CA - The Hi-Desert Cultural Center's Strings Conservatory celebrates another year of success with a free recital that is open to the public.  Ranging from beginners to advanced intermediate players from the Center's beginning and intermediate strings classes, the Conservatory's 15 members have spent the past year advancing their skills under the expert tutelage of HDCC Strings Conservatory Director, Jason Powell. This unique opportunity to come discover what music making is all about is free to the public with this special evening's recital beginning at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at the Hi-Desert Cultural Center's Blak Box Theater.  Following the recital will be a "stringed instrument petting zoo" where the public can see, touch, and even play violas, cellos, violins, and other stringed instruments.  Also following the event will be registration for the Conservatory's Summer String School program.

The Conservatory has grown and expanded since its inception almost two years ago.  After receiving a most generous donation of upwards of 20 new violins from a local patron of the arts in the fall of 2010, the Cultural Center began the string school as a pilot program – initially offering a beginner strings class for ages 8 and up.  The program also offered participants the use, at no charge, of one of the newly-donated violins.  With Powell, who holds a Master's Degree in music education and is completing his doctorate this year, at its helm, the classes and program were a tremendous success, and the school expanded its offerings to include advanced beginner and intermediate-level courses.

The Conservatory will again offer the very popular Summer program with two courses -- Beginning Strings and Intermediate Strings.  These 8-week summer courses run evenings from Tuesday, June 19th through August 7th and are designed for ages 8 through adult (younger participants may be admitted with the instructor's approval).  The beginner-level class offers a tremendous opportunity to "test drive" a wonderful stringed instrument without having to initially invest in its cost.  A FREE violin loaner program is available for a minimal $50.00 refundable deposit, enabling first-time students the chance to "experiment" with the violin while learning music theory as well.  Individuals interested in participating need to register early to obtain loaner instruments.  Students with their own string instrument are also encouraged to join the courses.  The course fee is $60 for 8 lessons (8 weeks) payable in advance.
